How you use your deck is vital to determine Size, Shape, Height, and Handrails

​​

                        SIZE TIPS:          Seating 2 people usually requires a minimum of a 5-foot by 10-foot deck or 50 square feet

                                                    Seating 4 people usually requires a minimum of a 10-foot by 10-foot deck or 100 square feet

                                                    Seating 6 people usually requires a minimum of a 12-foot by 12-foot deck or 144 square feet

                                                    Seating 8 people usually requires a minimum of a 16-foot by 16-foot deck or 256 square feet

                    SHAPE TIPS:        Lumber is sold in increments of 8,10, 12, 16, 20 -- (without 14 & 18-foot lengths) 

                                                   Choose dimensions such as 8x8, 10x12, 12x16, 10x16, 20x20, 16x20 etc.

                                                   Or choose combinations, such as a 24x24 deck is made by purchasing 12' lumber

                                                   The 8x8 deck is made by purchasing 16-foot lumber and cutting it in half

                                                   Don't pick a 14-foot deck, as no combination of standard lumber increments equals 14

                                                   Angled and Octagon decks increase the cost by $500 to $1,000 per corner

                   HEIGHT TIPS:        To be a Step or not to be a Step is the key question

                                                   Are you a Ninja? Two steps down from the sliding patio door, lower the deck to save costs

                                                   Might you drink too much on your new deck? Maybe no steps from the house to the deck

                                                   If you have kids, consider a gate, if you have a view consider glass rails​

                                                   If you don't have a view, consider a privacy fence on the deck

                     HAND RAIL:        Handrail is often more expensive than the Deck, so don't be shocked​​

                                                 Handrail is sold in 6 and 8 foot long sections, or a custom builid

                                                  Try to make the sides of your deck divisable by 6 and 8, or 3 and 4 - 1/2 a handrail

                                                 A 16 foot long side is two 8 foot sections of handrail, a 12 is two 6 foot sections

                                                 Try not to waste handrails with odd-size deck lengths
